Patriotic Plants : Memorial Day DIY Maynia Link-Up

Happy Monday! It's DIY Maynia time - scroll down to the bottom to add your project (you have until Wednesday night if you still need to add finishing touches)! :)

This week we're thinking SUMMER! Memorial Day is just around the corner and since it's the official start to summer, we thought we'd get ready for some outdoor parties. So gather up your best BBQ project - decorations, drinks, recipes, anything that would fit in during a summer long-weekend! :)

Since we don't have a grill (sad!), we won't be hosting any BBQs anytime soon - but just because our backyard isn't ready for summer doesn't mean our front porch can't be! I decided to test out my green thumb and plant some Red, White & Blue flowers to spruce up our porch.

I got these pots before we even moved into the house. That means they've been sitting around unused for OVER A YEAR! yikes.

I decided to get crazy and stack the smaller one inside. The pots are plastic, so I'm not too worried about the top one sinking down. I made sure to wet the dirt before stacking, so that everything was packed down nice and tight.

I wandered around Lowe's looking for cheap red, white and blue flowers. I didn't want to spent a lot since I have a tendency to kill plants. But, I think I found a good mix - I tried to get all sun-loving plants since the front of our house is in the sun all morning.

Here are all the flowers I got - clockwise from the top left: Snow Hill Salvia, Red Salvia, Lobelia, Aurea Sedum (for filler), and some Impatiens. The Impatiens are actually a shade flower, but fingers crossed they make it.

I put the majority of the Salvia's up top since they're nice and tall. Then filled in with the Lobelia, which I'm hoping will trail down a little as it grows.

I loaded up the bottom with the Impatiens, hoping that they'll be shielded from the sun enough. I even planted them around the back of the pot. I'm hoping that in a few weeks the whole thing is an explosion of flowers.
The Aurea Sedum is a "mounding ground cover" so I put that in the front of the pot, hoping it'll trail down, too.

I probably overloaded the pots. But they look so good being nice and full! I still have a few pots I haven't used, so I figure I can move things around in a few weeks if needed :) Or everything will be dead by then because I'll forget to water...

Our front porch looks so Patriotic and suburban now with our red, white and blue planter & American flag :)

Country to Chevron : Thrift Store DIY Maynia Link-up

Happy Monday! It's DIY Maynia time - scroll down to the bottom to add your project (you have until Wednesday night if you still need to add finishing touches)! :)

This week we asked everyone to "pop some tags" and put your own spin on a thrift store or garage sale find - basically anything secondhand. This has led me to sing "Thrift Shop" by Macklemore in my head nonstop all week. Including right this very second. :D

Anyways, here's my little makeover project - from country to chevron, all thanks to a little paint!

I found this little shelf for $3.99. True story, some lady tried to steal it from me! I mean, didn't grab it out of my hand or anything, but she kept showing me other shelves trying to get me to put this one down. Thrift shops are cut-throat, man.

The wood-tone and curvy edges were a little too "country" for me, so I thought I'd try modernizing it with some paint. First some spray primer (I didn't even have to sand the wood and everything stuck to this primer. LOVE it!)

Even though it looks white, I actually painted it grey - it's "Filtered Shade" by Behr (I think?), the wall color of our first floor. I just used it because I had it on hand :)

Since I'm not over the chevron trend yet, I decided to stencil some silver zigzags on to the shelf. Let me just say, stenciling is NOT fun or easy. I have smudges all over the place!

It was worth all the work to stencil the chevron, though - because I LOVE IT!

This shelf is the perfect space to store my thread in my sewing room! Just imagine how great it will look against a painted wall :)

Since my thread collection isn't big enough to fill the shelves yet, I added a few small knick-knacks and my paint from the past few projects.
Oh, and don't be too jealous of my Pen & Paint prints. Aren't they gorgeous?! I need to get frames for them, but for now washi tape is holding them up. Not ghetto at all.

I also got this chrome/silver utensil holder that I'm using to corral my scissors, rotary cutter and other sewing tools:

I tried to paint it with a brush and that just wasn't working, so I'll eventually spray paint it a nice bright, glossy color.
